"Traditional" Breast Reduction Surgery versus 'The Scarless
Procedure'
Plastic
surgeons have been performing breast reduction surgery for over
50 years. For the purpose of solving back, neck and breast pain
due to the excessive weight of the breasts, it is an exceptionally
good surgical decision. In most cases the surgery is performed in
a hospital under full general anesthesia, often taking 2-6 hours
with two surgeons performing the surgery in unison. With the excessive
bleeding the surgery causes blood transfusions are not uncommon.
The major disadvantages to the traditional method are the extreme
nature and extensive scarring. Although the wounds heal within a
matter of weeks, most patients have noticeable scars many months
to years after the surgery. The recuperation from this operation
can also be extensive. Most surgeons insist their patients maintain
very little activity for several weeks or even months. The scars
will usually "mature" or reach their final form in 1-2
years. It is also typical for patients to report minor to intense
pain for years after the traditional breast reduction surgery procedure.
Contrast
all of this with the "Scarless" breast reduction. It is
performed in our certified surgicenter, with twilight sleep anesthesia,
plus local anesthesia. There is little or no pain during the postoperative
period. Patients are encouraged to resume full activity as soon
as they feel up to it. The scar is about ¼ inch, in the fold
under the breast. This is where the canulla for the liposuction
is introduced. There are no blood transfusions, or change in sensation,
or ability to breast feed, as there is no "cutting".
How
is all of this done? With constant advances in the art of liposuction,
we can consistently get a 1-3 cup size reduction in each breast.
Remember, the female breast is composed of at least 50% fat by the
age of 35. Liposuction, with special instruments, will remove fatty
tissue but not the firmer glandular tissue. After surgery, the skin
shows a dramatic degree of shrinkage, with the nipple/areola often
rising 1-2 inches once fully healed. So you can see that the operation
provides a significant lift in most patients, but the amount of
lift is determined by the patients elastic skin characteristics,
not skin removal. This allows the operation to function without
scars
Another
wonderful feature of the Scarless surgery is its use in "asymmetry".
This is a condition were the two breasts are different sizes. As
this is often present in the young patient, we are especially pleased
to be able to offer this operation to adjust the size without leaving
a visible scar.
